Sparks Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Sparks Reserve is a large open off-leash reserve on Heidelberg Road in Ivanhoe, stretching along the Yarra River corridor with sweeping grass, gentle rises and mature trees. Run by Banyule City Council, it is the roomy option for Ivanhoe dog owners: space to actually run and play fetch rather than circle a small suburban patch.

The dog setup

The reserve is a designated off-lead area under Banyule's rules, and those rules are the standard effective-control type: your dog stays in sight and under voice or hand control, you carry a lead, and dogs go back on lead within 10 metres of the playground equipment. If an organised event, group booking or sports training is running, leashes apply for the duration. Pick up after your dog and use the bins at the entrance. It is an open, unfenced space, so it rewards a dog with decent recall rather than testing one without.

The vibe

Riverside, open and easygoing, with the traffic hum of Heidelberg Road on one side and the river on the other. There is a water tap with a metal bowl for dogs, unshaded tables and seating, and enough ground that a proper fetch session is realistic. Joggers and cyclists use the paths near the road side, so keep an eye on the edges during busy stretches.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits at 10 The Boulevard, Ivanhoe, best reached via the service road near the Heidelberg Road and The Boulevard intersection. The small car park off Heidelberg Road near The Boulevard fills up at peak times, so early arrivals do better. Several bus routes run along Heidelberg Road if you are arriving without a car.

When to go

Early mornings and late afternoons on weekdays are the quiet windows, and that is also when the small car park has room. Weekends draw the bigger dog crowd. The seating is unshaded, so summer visits favour the morning.
