Sparks Reserve is a large, open off-leash reserve on Heidelberg Road in Ivanhoe, running along the Yarra River with grassy space, gentle rises and mature trees. It's a good option for active dogs that want room to run rather than a small suburban patch.

The rules. Dogs need to be under effective voice control and in sight to be off-leash, or kept on lead. Stay on lead within 10 metres of the playground equipment, and expect on-lead requirements during organised events or sports training. Cleaning up after your dog is mandatory and bins are provided near the entrance.

What's there. A water tap with a metal bowl, unshaded tables and seating, a small car park off Heidelberg Road near The Boulevard, and waste bins at the entrance.

Getting there. Best reached via the service road near the Heidelberg Road and The Boulevard intersection. Several bus routes run along Heidelberg Road for those without a car.

Nearby with the dogs. Bambino Coffee Bar and Lucci Eatery are both a short drive away for coffee after the walk. If Sparks Reserve is busy, Ford Park and Chelsworth Park are nearby alternatives.

the open grass here is great for a proper fetch session, just watch for other dogs and joggers near the Heidelberg Road side.

Early mornings and late afternoons on weekdays tend to be quietest; parking can be tight at peak times given the small car park.
