Whites Lane Retarding Basin is a large, open off-leash space in Glen Waverley, set on a grassy retarding basin near the corner of Watsons Road and Whites Lane, just east of the tennis courts. It gives dogs plenty of room to run, with the trade-off that the low-lying ground gets muddy in wet weather.

The rules. This is a City of Monash off-leash area: keep your dog under effective voice or hand control, carry a lead, and put your dog back on-lead within 20 metres of play equipment or BBQ areas in use. The tennis courts and any playground zones are on-lead or off-limits. Pick up after your dog and use the bins provided.

What's there. The basin is largely open grass, framed by its natural slopes rather than fully fenced, so it is not an escape-proof enclosure. Water points are not guaranteed, so bring your own bowl. Seating is informal and limited, and there is off-street parking at the Whites Lane lot.

Getting there. Access is off Whites Lane near the Watsons Road intersection, with parking usually available on-site. Buses run along Springvale Road and Waverley Road.

When to go. Weekday evenings and weekend mornings are busiest; mid-morning on a weekday is the quietest, which suits shyer dogs. Through winter, pack a towel: the basin holds water and turns boggy after rain.
