Moomba Park sits alongside the Merri Creek trail in Fawkner, and its draw is the fully fenced off-leash enclosure - a secure, enclosed run with agility gear and separate zones for big and small dogs, which makes it a genuinely safe option for social dogs and reactive-dog owners who need a boundary they can trust.

The rules. Dogs are off-leash only inside the fenced dog park itself. Elsewhere in the reserve, keep your dog on a lead within 15 metres of the playground and the sporting grounds, and under effective voice or hand control at all times. Bins are not always stocked, so bring your own bags.

What's there. A secure, fully enclosed enclosure with agility obstacles, separate big-dog and small-dog zones, fresh water stations, shaded seating and shelters, and public toilets on-site.

Getting there. The park is at 2-30 McBryde St, Fawkner, with free on-site parking. It is a moderate walk from Gowrie Station on the Upfield line, and easily reached on foot or by bike via the Merri Creek Trail.

Nearby with the dogs. Several cafes along Sydney Road, a short drive away, keep outdoor dog-friendly seating - always confirm with the venue first.

The separate small-dog zone means shy dogs can warm up without the whole pack barrelling over. Ease them in on a quiet weekday morning first.

Weekends and the early-morning and evening runs are busiest and most social. For a nervous dog, aim for a mid-week morning or early afternoon when the enclosure is quiet.
