Whittlesea Public Gardens Fenced Dog Park

The Whittlesea Public Gardens Fenced Dog Park in Lalor delivers what most suburban dog parks cannot: genuine length. At 260 metres by 35 metres, the fully fenced off-lead enclosure gives dogs room to stretch out at full speed, backed by a ten-obstacle agility course for dogs that want a workout along with the run.

The rules

Off-lead is permitted only inside the fence; dogs stay on lead everywhere else in the wider Whittlesea Public Gardens. Entry runs through a double-gated system at the eastern end, and the discipline matters: close the outer gate behind you before opening the inner one, especially with another dog loitering near the entrance. Owners are required to stay inside the enclosure, maintain voice control and pick up immediately.

The layout

The northern end is open grass while the southern side is treed and shaded, useful for cooling off between runs. The agility course sits at the western end with pipes, weave poles, hurdles and ramps, and benches are concentrated nearby so supervising and resting happen in the same spot. A water tap with a dog bowl sits near the entry, public toilets including accessible facilities are by the playground, and lighting covers evening use.

Getting there

The park sits at the southern end of Whittlesea Public Gardens, 158-160 Barry Road, Lalor, with a dedicated car park at the southern end. Bus routes along Barry Road stop within a short walk. Weekday afternoons between 4pm and 6pm are the busiest slot and weekends draw steady crowds, so go early or late morning for space.

Worth knowing

Sections of the ground turn very boggy after rain and stay that way, so wear boots in wet spells or give it a couple of days to dry out. For coffee afterwards, ROUTE 21 and Modo Mia are the nearest confirmed dog-friendly sits, and the Lyndarum Wetlands Fenced Dog Park in Epping is a second fenced option in the same corner of the north.
