Charles Mutton Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Charles Mutton Reserve is a large, open grass reserve in Fawkner built around a sporting oval, with the oval itself designated off-leash. It is a good spot for a dog that wants room to run flat out, but it is not a sealed enclosure - the perimeter has known gaps, so it suits dogs with solid recall rather than escape artists.

The rules. Dogs may be off-leash under effective voice or hand control, but carry a lead and use it if your dog threatens another person or animal. Leash up within 15 metres of playgrounds, barbecues and organised sporting events, and keep dogs off the playing surface when sport is on. Bins are provided; clean up after your dog.

What's there. Open grass for running, bench seating around the oval, and lighting for evening walks. Water can be limited, so bring a portable bowl. The playgrounds are on-leash zones.

Getting there. The reserve is at 45-63 Lorne St, Fawkner, reached via Sydney Road or Blair Street, with free street parking on the surrounding streets. It is within walking distance of Gowrie Station on the Upfield line.

Nearby with the dogs. Little Anderson Cafe at 93 Anderson Rd is a nearby walk-up spot, and cafes along Sydney Road offer outdoor seating - confirm dog policies before you sit.

Weekday evenings after 5pm and weekend mornings are busiest. Mid-morning or mid-afternoon on a weekday is quieter, and worth timing around soccer season, when the oval sees the most use.
