Charles Mutton Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Charles Mutton Reserve is a large, open grass reserve in Fawkner built around a sporting oval, with the oval itself running as the off-leash zone. It is a good spot for a dog that wants room to run flat out, but this is not a sealed enclosure, so it suits dogs with solid recall rather than escape artists.

The dog setup

Dogs may be off-leash on the oval under effective voice or hand control, with a lead carried and used if your dog threatens another person or animal. Leash up within 15 metres of playgrounds, barbecues and organised sporting events, and keep dogs off the playing surface whenever sport is on, which is often. The perimeter is not a continuous fence and locals report gaps along it, so check the boundary before you unclip a dog with wandering habits.

Around the rest of the reserve there is bench seating on the circuit path, lighting for evening walks, exercise equipment, a community garden and a playground that sits inside an on-leash zone. Bins are provided, but water can be limited, so bring a portable bowl. Wheelchair-accessible parking spaces sit near the key entry points.

Max: the oval boundary has gaps and paths flood after heavy rain. Check the fence line before you unclip, and time your visit around the soccer fixture list.

The vibe

This is a genuine multi-sport reserve, with cricket and football on the oval through the seasons and bowls, netball and tennis courts alongside. That makes it a busy, community-flavoured spot rather than a quiet bush walk: weekday evenings after 5pm and weekend mornings are the busiest windows, while mid-morning or mid-afternoon on a weekday is calmer. During soccer season the oval sees heavy booked use, so have a plan B for off-lead time.

Getting there and parking

The reserve is at 45-63 Lorne Street, Fawkner, reached via Sydney Road or Blair Street, with free street parking on the surrounding frontages. Gowrie Station on the Upfield line is within walking distance, which makes this one of the easier northern-suburbs dog spots to reach without a car.

Close by with the dogs

If you want a guaranteed enclosure, the Moomba Park fenced dog park by the Merri Creek trail is the secure option in the same suburb, and Sewell Reserve is another big oval run one suburb over in Glenroy.
