Leicester Reserve

Leicester Reserve is a wetland-edged reserve off Leicester Ramble in Eaton, with natural trails along the Collie River and enough birdlife that it doubles as a spot for a wildlife-watching walk. It is a designated dog exercise area, and dogs can run off-leash for most of the day.

The rules. Dogs may be off-leash between 3pm and 10am daily. Outside that window, or within the playground and barbecue areas, dogs must be on lead. Dogs are not permitted in the Proposed Possum Sanctuary section of the reserve, and owners must keep dogs out of other designated bushland pockets. Pick up after your dog.

What's there. Natural dirt and gravel walking tracks, public toilets, barbecue facilities in designated areas, and a playground (lead required nearby). Parking is on-street along Leicester Ramble and can be limited near the entrance.

Watch-outs. The reserve sits along wetlands, so expect muddy patches after rain and fluctuating water levels. Black swans and other waterbirds are common; if your dog has a strong prey drive, keep them close near the water's edge.

Getting there. The reserve is on Leicester Ramble, Eaton WA 6232, reached from Forrest Highway and Panizza Road. The nearest bus stops are around Eaton Drive/Treendale, a short walk from the entrance.

When to go. Early mornings before 9am and late afternoons after 4pm are the best combination of quiet paths and off-leash hours. Weekends are busier than weekdays. Good for dogs that are steady around waterbirds and comfortable on natural, sometimes muddy, terrain.
