Hillcrest Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Hillcrest Reserve is a 24/7 off-leash reserve on Lisbeth Avenue in Donvale, built around a steep grassy gully that makes short work of a high-energy dog. It is unfenced and opens straight onto the surrounding streets, so it rewards good recall.

The dog setup

Off-leash is allowed any time, day or night, but your dog has to be under effective voice control. Clip up immediately if they stop responding or start bothering other park users. Dogs must be on leash within 5 metres of the playground and picnic area at the top of the reserve, so keep the lead handy even mid-run.

The main feature is the hill itself: a steep grassy slope that gives a fit dog real aerobic work. There is a tap for fresh water, so bring a bowl. Seating is limited and there are no public toilets. Bins are provided, but carry spare bags because the slope seems to find every last deposit. After heavy rain the bottom of the gully turns muddy.

Max: From the top you cannot always see the bottom of the gully. Keep eyes on your dog when it drops out of sight over the slope.

Worth knowing

Busiest windows are early morning from about 7am to 9am and late afternoon from 4:30pm to 6:30pm, when the after-work crowd lands. Midday on a weekday is the quietest time. This is a good fit for an energetic dog that needs a hill to burn off on, and a poor one for a dog that wanders: the open boundaries mean you are relying on recall the whole visit.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits at 39 Lisbeth Avenue, reached via Springvale Road or Doncaster Road, with free street parking along Lisbeth Avenue. Buses run on the nearby main roads, then it is a short walk. The top entrance is step-free, which helps if you have a pram or a dog with stiff hips.
