Schafter Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Schafter Reserve on Schafter Drive is a small, roughly 0.7-hectare undulating off-leash reserve in Doncaster East, with a long road frontage and a relaxed local feel. It is built for a short run and a good sniff rather than a marathon walk.

The dog setup

Dogs are off lead throughout the reserve under effective voice or hand-signal control. The reserve is not fully fenced, and that long street frontage along Schafter Drive is the soft edge, so steady recall matters before you unclip. Keep the lead on within 15 metres of the playground, any barbecue or picnic area, and organised sporting events, functions or public meetings. Bag every deposit and use the bins, because reserves like this stay dog friendly only when people do. The gentle rises across the reserve give a ball game a bit more interest than a flat oval, and the grass is usually kept in decent order.

On the human side there is a playground upgraded in 2017, a basketball and netball half-court with hopscotch and four-square markings, and open undulating grass for running. Water taps are not guaranteed, so bring your own bowl and water.

Quietest mid-morning and early afternoon on weekdays. Weekends draw local families to the playground, so the on-lead buffer zone gets more use and the general feel shifts from dog park to family reserve. It suits a quick, low-key off-leash session close to home, especially for dogs that find big busy parks overwhelming.

Getting there and parking

Access runs from Ridley Court through to Schafter Drive, with on-street parking usually available along Schafter Drive. The Doncaster Road shops and Westfield Doncaster sit a short drive away if you need to tack an errand onto the trip.

Close by with the dogs

For a longer session, the off-leash area at Zerbes Reserve has elevated grassy hills on Blackburn Road, and Boronia Grove Reserve offers a big open run on Leeds Street. Both are unfenced like Schafter, so the recall rule carries over.
