The basics. Schafter Reserve on Schafter Drive is a small (about 0.7-hectare) undulating off-leash reserve in Doncaster East with a long road frontage and a relaxed local feel, good for a short run and a sniff rather than a marathon walk.

The rules. Dogs are off-lead throughout the reserve under effective voice control. It is not fully fenced, with that long street frontage, so steady recall is important. On-lead within 15 metres of the playground, any BBQ or picnic area, and organised sporting events, functions or public meetings. Bag and bin all waste to keep the reserve open to dogs.

What's there. A playground (upgraded in 2017), a basketball and netball half-court with hopscotch and four-square markings, and open grass for running. Water taps are not guaranteed, so bring your own bowl.

Getting there. Access from Ridley Court through to Schafter Drive, with on-street parking usually available on Schafter Drive. Doncaster Road shops and Westfield Doncaster are a short drive away.

When to go. Quietest mid-morning and early afternoon on weekdays; weekends draw local families to the playground. Good for a quick, low-key off-leash session close to home.
