The basics. Doncaster Reserve, off Leeds Street behind the Manningham Club and the Jackson Court shops, is a small, level off-leash patch built for quick daily runs rather than big bushland walks. The flat grass suits older dogs and any dog that prefers even ground, and the cafes of Jackson Court are a two to three-minute walk away.

The rules. Designated off-leash but only partly fenced, with gaps that allow access toward the road, so keep an eye on the edges and rely on solid recall. Dogs must be on-lead in the car park, within 15 metres of any playground, permanent barbecue or organised sporting event, and whenever sport or training is on the grounds. Pick up after your dog.

What's there. A drinking fountain usually fitted with a dog bowl, outdoor fitness equipment, bench seating and some (limited) evening lighting. Free on-site parking sits right beside the grass.

Getting there. At 2-12 Leeds Street, accessed behind The Manningham Club, with the car park next to the off-leash area. Buses run along Doncaster Road and Blackburn Road nearby.

When to go. Busiest weekdays 4.30 to 6.30pm and Saturday mornings; quieter mid-morning, weekday lunchtimes and later evenings. It is a compact space that fills quickly, so anxious dogs are better off mid-week. Handy for a fast leg-stretch combined with a Jackson Court coffee.
