Doncaster Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Doncaster Reserve, off Leeds Street behind the Manningham Club and the Jackson Court shops, is a small, level off-leash patch in Doncaster East built for quick daily runs rather than big bushland walks. The flat grass suits older dogs and any dog that prefers even ground.

The dog setup

The area is designated off-leash but only partly fenced, with gaps that open toward the road, so watch the edges and rely on genuine recall. Under Manningham Council rules, dogs must be on lead in the car park, within 15 metres of any playground, permanent barbecue or organised sporting event, and whenever sport or training is running on the grounds.

Carry a bag and pick up on the spot, as with any council reserve.

Worth knowing

A drinking fountain usually fitted with a dog bowl sits near the grass, alongside outdoor fitness equipment, bench seating and limited evening lighting. Free on-site parking is directly beside the off-leash area, and the Jackson Court cafe strip is a two to three-minute walk for a coffee afterwards.

Getting there

Access is at 2 to 12 Leeds Street, behind The Manningham Club, with the car park next to the grass. Buses run along Doncaster Road and Blackburn Road nearby.

When to go

Weekday late afternoons from 4.30pm to 6.30pm and Saturday mornings are the busiest windows. Mid-morning, weekday lunchtimes and later evenings are quieter, and because the space is compact and fills quickly, anxious dogs do better mid-week.

If your dog needs a secure boundary, the Aranga Reserve fenced dog park at Donvale is the fully fenced alternative in Manningham.

For a bigger loop, Ruffey Lake Park is in the same suburb and gives a proper walk rather than a quick run.
