Ainslie Park Dog Off Leash Area

Ainslie Park Dog Off Leash Area is the open space of a major sporting reserve in Croydon, centred on a cricket and football oval used by the Ainslie Park Cricket Club and East Ringwood Junior Football Club, with a grassy treed section to the south. It is a shared ground, so the off-leash quality of any visit depends on reading the field before you let go of the lead.

The dog setup

The reserve is off-leash under Maroondah City Council rules, with the standard conditions attached: your dog stays within view, comes back immediately when called, and you carry a lead the whole time. Dogs go back on-lead within 15 metres of playgrounds, barbecues and picnic shelters, and whenever organised sport or training is using the oval. When cricket or football training takes the main ground, the southern grassy treed area is the fallback. Clean up immediately, and note greyhounds must stay leashed in public regardless of the designation. One caution: the oval has partial fencing with gaps a small dog could slip through, so treat it as open space, not an enclosure.

Max: check for footy training before the lead comes off. If the oval is taken, the southern grass is a perfectly good consolation prize.

The vibe

This is a big, flat community reserve with a perimeter circuit of roughly 380 metres around the oval, a water tap with a bowl, bins near the pavilion, and a sheltered table in the southern section. Weekday mid-morning to early afternoon is quiet; weekday evenings after 4pm bring training and weekend mornings get busy with juniors. It suits dogs who need room to stretch out and owners who are happy to move zones when the ground changes hands.

Getting there

Access is off Dorset Road via Brentnall Road, with two large free car parks at the northern and southern ends. Croydon Station on the Lilydale line is a short trip away, and local streets make it walkable or rideable from surrounding parts of Croydon.

Make a day of it

If your dog needs a secure fence, Eastfield Fenced Dog Park and Bede Spillane Reserve are both in Croydon. Brentwood Park is another unfenced off-leash option nearby, and Blackwork is the local coffee stop for the trip home.
