Impey Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Impey Reserve sits behind the residential streets of Caravonica, a few minutes from Lake Placid, and it is one of the better-equipped off-leash spots in the Cairns region. The draw for most owners is the small lake inside the reserve: a rare spot in the tropics where a confident dog can actually swim during an off-leash session rather than just run.

The dog setup

Dogs can run off-leash across the main reserve under effective voice and visual control, with a separate fenced section on the right-hand side of the park set aside for small dogs who would rather not mix it with the bigger crowd. Mature trees shade much of the ground, and there are water taps with bowls, seating for owners and waste bag dispensers. Pick up after your dog and use the bins provided, and keep dogs from harassing other visitors, wildlife or other dogs. The area is managed by Cairns Regional Council, whose standard exercising-your-dog conditions apply.

Worth knowing

Because the main reserve is open rather than perimeter-fenced, recall is the entry price. If your dog bolts, work them on the lead at the edge first or use the small-dog enclosure. The lake is a natural water body, so give it a look before letting an eager swimmer in, and keep sessions short in the build-up months when the humidity is punishing. Mornings are the comfortable window most of the year.

Getting there and parking

Access is via Impey Street behind the houses or from the Lake Placid Road side, with street parking along the reserve boundary. The reserve sits at the foot of the Barron Gorge country, so the backdrop is rainforest rather than suburbia, and the Lake Placid day-use area is next door if you want to extend the outing on the lead.

While you're out there

For a second fenced run, the Gamburra Drive Park Fenced Dog Park at Redlynch is a short drive up the valley. Everyday Lover at Trinity Park welcomes leashed dogs in its outdoor seating if you are heading back towards the coast, or stop at Shaka Cafe in Freshwater on the way through.
