Impey Reserve Dog Off Leash Area sits behind the residential streets of Caravonica, offering a shady, open stretch of green with its own small lake for dogs to swim in. It is one of the better-equipped off-leash spots in the Cairns region, thanks to a dedicated fenced section for smaller dogs.
The rules. Dogs can run off-leash across the main reserve but need to stay under effective voice control at all times. A separate fenced area on the right-hand side of the park is set aside for small dogs who prefer not to mix it with the bigger crowd. Owners are expected to pick up after their dogs and use the bins provided, and dogs should not harass other visitors or wildlife.
What's there. Mature trees keep large parts of the reserve shaded, which matters in the Cairns heat. The lake is the standout feature, giving dogs a place to cool off and swim rather than just walk laps. The small-dog area has its own seating so owners can sit and watch rather than stand around, and there is a dedicated on-site parking area.
Getting there. The reserve is at 72 Impey St, Caravonica, tucked in behind the houses on the eastern side of the street. It is a car-access spot; there is no meaningful public transport directly to the park, so plan on driving.
Nearby with the dogs. The immediate area is residential, but dog-friendly cafes turn up along the Captain Cook Highway toward Cairns and around Smithfield Shopping Centre. Caravan parks near Lake Placid Road, a short drive away, also tend to welcome dogs, but confirm pet policies before you book.

Weekdays and evenings are the quiet window; the reserve tends to fill up on Sunday mornings, Wednesday evenings and Friday afternoons. If you want the lake to yourself, go early on a weekday morning.
