Bamford Close Fenced Dog Park

Bamford Close Fenced Dog Park occupies a corner of Rainy Mountain Park in Smithfield, behind the shopping centre off the Captain Cook Highway. It is a large, secure off-leash space with separate fenced sections commonly used to split big dogs from small ones, which makes it the practical choice on Cairns' northern beaches when you want a proper run without a dog disappearing into the wider parkland.

The dog setup

Leashes come off only inside the fenced enclosures; everywhere else in Rainy Mountain Park is on-lead. Owners stay in the yard with their dog, keep them under effective voice control, pick up with the bags and bins provided, and leash up and leave if a dog turns aggressive. The facility is open around the clock.

One caveat earns its place here: parts of the perimeter fence have minor gaps at the base, and a very small or slim dog may squeeze under. Walk the fence line before you unclip, especially after wet weather has moved soil around.

The vibe

Mature trees throw genuine shade over the benches, a luxury in the tropics that makes midday visits survivable outside the depths of the wet season. A drinking water station serves the dogs, and the park functions as a community hub for socialising, with the adjacent playground meaning families often make a morning of it. It is generally well maintained by Cairns Regional Council.

Getting there and parking

The park sits at 28 Survey Street, Smithfield, off Cumberland Avenue behind Smithfield Shopping Centre, and access from the Captain Cook Highway is direct. There is a wheelchair-accessible car park serving the park, and the Smithfield Shopping Centre bus stop, a Northern Beaches hub, is within walking distance.

Close by with the dogs

Impey Reserve at Caravonica is the other fully fenced run in the area, and Sunbird Park at Kewarra Beach covers the beachside suburbs. For coffee with the dog afterwards, Little Corner Cafe is in the suburb.
