Sunbird Park Fenced Dog Park

Sunbird Park's fenced dog park on Nova Street is Kewarra Beach's dedicated off-leash space, listed by Cairns Regional Council as the suburb's secure enclosure. Fully fenced grass ringed by native foliage, it gives the northern beaches what the foreshore cannot: a properly contained run where a bolt for the road is not on the menu.

The dog setup

The enclosure sits on the southern side of Nova Street, tucked between the park's pedestrian paths, with a double-gated entry as the standard route in. Keep the lead on until you are through both gates, then let go: the ground is flat, well-maintained grass and sandy soil, and water taps keep bowls topped up. Bags and bins are provided, and shade spots exist though seating is limited and partly exposed to the weather.

Council rules apply even inside the fence: stay in the park, keep your dog under effective control, and leash and remove any dog showing aggression. Outside the enclosure, leads stay on across the surrounding paths and parkland. A well-socialised dog makes for a smoother visit when the late-afternoon regulars arrive.

Worth knowing

Max: hold the leash firm at the double gates. Wallabies move through the surrounding bushland, and the one moment a sighting turns into a dash is the second between the outer gate and the inner one.

Shade and seating are both thin on the ground, so a long stay on a hot day needs planning: bring water beyond what the taps supply, and aim for morning or late afternoon in the build-up months.

Getting there and parking

Street parking runs along Nova Street, free and generally easy outside the late-afternoon social hour, which runs roughly 5 to 6pm when the neighbourhood regulars pile in. Weekdays during the day are quieter if your dog prefers space to itself.
