At the northern end of Upolu Esplanade in Clifton Beach, roughly 25 minutes north of Cairns, sits one of Tropical North Queensland's most relaxed off-leash stretches of sand. Officially designated by Cairns Regional Council, this quiet local spot gives dogs kilometres of shoreline to sprint, swim and sniff, well away from the heavier foot traffic of neighbouring Palm Cove. The appeal is straightforward: wide sand, sea breeze and palm-fringed foreshore without the crowds.

The rules. The off-leash zone runs from the northern end of Upolu Esplanade, extending north towards Palm Cove and finishing 150 metres south of Veivers Road. Access is available 24 hours a day, but dogs must be under effective voice control at all times. Surrounding parklands and residential streets require leads. Dogs are prohibited inside stinger net enclosures, within 2 metres of playgrounds, and around public toilet facilities. Council fines for failing to pick up after your dog sit at a hefty $834, so come prepared with bags.

The beach. This is an unfenced, open stretch of coastline with a significant tidal range. At low tide the sand expands dramatically, giving dogs plenty of room to cover ground. At high tide the usable beach narrows considerably, so timing your visit around the tide chart makes a real difference. Mature palm trees along the foreshore provide natural shade for post-swim cooldowns.

What's there. Amenities along the esplanade include public toilets, BBQ facilities, a children's playground and waste bins. There is no fencing, no dedicated dog wash and no water stations specifically for dogs, so bring fresh water and a bowl. A shared walking and cycling track connects the beach south to Palm Cove if you want to extend your outing.

Getting there. Ample unrestricted street parking runs along Upolu Esplanade. Translink bus routes service nearby Palm Cove, which is a short walk north along the coastal track.

Watch-outs. Stinger season runs from November through May, with box jellyfish and Irukandji present in Tropical North Queensland waters. Stinger nets are installed along the foreshore, but dogs are not permitted inside the enclosures, so swimming during these months carries genuine risk. Crocodile sightings in far north waterways are rare but documented, and council signage is present. Read it and assess conditions before letting your dog charge into the water.

When to go. Early morning between June and October is the sweet spot: stinger risk is minimal, temperatures are manageable, and low tide delivers the widest stretch of sand. Check the tide charts the night before, pack fresh water and aim to arrive within two hours of low tide for the best experience.
