Palm Cove

Palm Cove is a beach village about 25 minutes north of Cairns, and with a dog it works best as a base of private holiday homes and villas rather than the big resort apartments along Williams Esplanade. Most beachfront complexes keep strict no-pet policies, so the practical pet-friendly options are fenced holiday houses and a handful of boutique rooms that allow dogs in selected accommodation only.

Under Cairns Regional Council rules, dogs are off-leash on the sand between the Palm Cove jetty and the rocks on the northern side, where signed. Dogs are banned from the stinger enclosure areas and their surrounds, playgrounds, public toilets and conservation areas, and you must carry bags and pick up. The beach off-leash zone is shared with walkers and families, so keep your dog under effective control.

Make a day of it
