Schwabs Galley

Schwabs Galley sits on Nelson Place at 165 Nelson Place, Williamstown, directly opposite the foreshore and marina, a casual family-run spot best known for its cake cabinet. For dog owners the outdoor tables and the water across the road are the combination that makes it a regular stop.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables, part of which is covered for shade or shelter, with water bowls put out by staff. Dogs stay outside, in line with the usual cafe health rules. One local review calls the welcome more dog-tolerated than dog-doting, so a dog that settles at the table is on solid ground here.

The draw is the cake selection, including gluten-free options and a well-regarded vanilla slice, alongside focaccias, quiches, spanakopita and vegan choices, with coffee and chai covering the drinks side.

Worth knowing

Doors open at 7am every day, with earlier close on weekdays and 5pm finishes on weekends, so this is a breakfast and lunch stop rather than an afternoon one. The queue for cakes can build mid-morning on weekends.

Getting there and parking

Street parking runs along Nelson Place but fills on weekends, so fall back to the side streets or the parking near Commonwealth Reserve. Trains to Williamstown station leave a flat ten minute walk.

The foreshore parkland is directly across the road for a walk before or after, and the Williamstown Coastal Loop strings the waterfront together from here.
