The Early Bird Wagga

The Early Bird is a small central Wagga cafe on Fitzmaurice Street with a genuine dog streak: the kitchen keeps dog treats on hand, water bowls typically sit out front, and the cafe runs charity weekends for rescue groups, including greyhound rescue. It opens from 6am, true to its name, and the street-side tables are where dogs settle in.

The dog setup

Dogs join you at the outdoor footpath seating, not inside the cafe. The kitchen keeps dog treats alongside the human pastries, which puts it a notch above the usual tolerate-and-tolerate street table, and water bowls are usually available. The seating faces the street, so a dog that settles around foot traffic will be most comfortable, and it is worth bringing your own bowl on warm mornings.

The vibe and the menu

The menu is coffee, breaky wraps, toasties and a rotating baked selection that has included muffins and loaves with a local following. Hours run 6am to midday Mondays and Tuesdays, then 6am to 2pm Wednesday through Sunday. Community fundraisers are part of the calendar, so a weekend visit sometimes doubles as a rescue-group fundraiser.

Getting there and parking

The cafe sits at 153 Fitzmaurice Street in the Wagga Wagga CBD, a short walk from the Murrumbidgee river side of town. On-street parking on Fitzmaurice and nearby Baylis Street turns over steadily at peak times, so allow a few minutes in the breakfast rush. Earlier is calmer for both parking and an outdoor table.

Wagga Beach on the Murrumbidgee is a short walk for a riverside stroll on a lead, and the fenced run at Narrung Street Fenced Dog Park sits by the river precinct. Wilks Park Off Leash Area over the bridge covers the bigger off-lead session, and Chaston Pet Hub is the south-side option. Little Lunch on Forsyth is the next CBD coffee stop on the circuit.
