Wilks Park Off Leash Area

Wilks Park's off-leash area sits on the eastern side of the park on Hampden Avenue, North Wagga Wagga, a large unfenced grassy expanse under mature shade trees right by the Murrumbidgee River. It is the local off-leash option for the north side of the river, and it doubles as a free 72-hour self-contained camping spot, so it gets a mix of local dog walkers and travelling vans.

The rules. Off-leash use is daylight hours only, and the area is not fenced, so keep an eye on recall near the access road. You need voice control of your dog at all times and must stop them harassing or chasing other people, dogs or wildlife. Pick up and bin all waste. Dogs must wear a collar with ID tags and be lifetime registered, and declared dangerous, menacing or restricted-breed dogs cannot be off-leash here.

What's there. Dog waste bins are provided, and there is ample natural shade from mature trees. The wider park has a toilet block, an RV dump point and undercover seating. The grassy area can get potholed or overgrown in patches, so watch your footing.

Getting there. Direct vehicle access and easy parking off Hampden Avenue, though the access road itself is gravel/dirt. Local Wagga Wagga bus services reach North Wagga Wagga with a short walk to the park; there is no direct public transport to the gate.

Watch-outs. Because it is unfenced and beside a road, this suits dogs with solid recall rather than bolters. It sits on the river floodplain, so check conditions if there has been recent rain or flooding upstream.

Go in the morning or evening for shade and fewer vans pulled up for the night. It suits confident, well-recalled dogs best, and it is a handy stop if you are already camped at Wilks Park or staying nearby and want a proper stretch of the legs before heading into Wagga Wagga itself.
