Artiga Specialty Coffee

Artiga Specialty Coffee sits right on the edge of the Darebin Creek trail off Mansfield Street in Thornbury, backed straight onto creek bushland. The covered outdoor deck overlooks the trail itself, which makes it the rare cafe that is genuinely built into a dog walk rather than just near one: walkers and cyclists roll off the path, settle the dog at the deck and order.

The dog setup

Dogs join you on the covered deck and outdoor terrace, where there is room around the tables and the trail-side setting keeps things relaxed. Staff sometimes hand out treats and water bowls are typically available. The indoor room is for two-legged customers, but with the creek as the view, the deck is where you would sit anyway. Wheelchair-accessible entrance too.

The vibe and the food

The menu plays to the trail crowd: specialty coffee, smoothies and the odd beetroot latte, wraps and hot-and-cold breakfast and lunch plates with gluten-free and vegan options covered. There are occasional live-music sessions on the deck. Hours run 7:30am to 3pm on weekdays and 8:30am to 3pm on weekends, with weekday mornings the quiet window before the weekend trail traffic arrives.

Getting there and parking

You can walk or ride straight in off the Darebin Creek trail, or drive in off Mansfield Street, where parking is available at the door. The setting is a suburban pocket of Thornbury that feels a long way from High Street once you are on the deck.

Nearby with the dogs

The creek trail at the door is the obvious walk before or after. For off-lead time, Mayer Park's dog off-leash area and Henderson Park's dog off-leash area are both in Thornbury, and Fairfield Park's fenced dog park is down the trail. If you are pairing cafes, Little Henri on High Street has a dog-friendly courtyard of its own.
