Mayer Park Dog Off Leash Area

Mayer Park at 99 Leinster Grove is one of Thornbury's best-regarded dog parks: a spacious open parkland near Merri Creek with a designated off-leash area in its southern section. The zone is unfenced grassed space, so it is a runner's park rather than a contained one, and good recall is the price of entry.

The dog setup

The off-leash area sits in the southern section of the park, with Darebin's standard buffers wrapping around it: dogs on-lead within 10 metres of the playground and barbecue facilities, and on all surrounding footpaths. Effective voice control is required off-lead, you must carry a leash and pick up after your dog, and dogs that are aggressive, unwell or on heat should stay home. These are Darebin Council rules, so confirm current signage on site, because buffer distances around BBQs can be enforced more widely than people expect.

The facilities earn the park its local following: a dog water tap with a bowl, waste bins, picnic tables and benches, a playground, and an outdoor exercise gym. The oval itself is largely open and unshaded, with mature trees around the edges.

Max: a dog tap that actually works is rarer than it should be. Mayer Park has one, and the regulars know it.

Getting there and parking

The park sits between Leinster Grove and Normanby Avenue, with free untimed street parking along Leinster Grove and the side streets, generally findable even on weekends. It connects easily to the Merri Creek trail for a leashed warm-up or cool-down, and Thornbury's High Street strip is a short walk away.

Worth knowing

The park doubles as a sports ground with a cricket pitch and soccer space, so organised sport pushes the oval back on-lead. The open boundary toward surrounding streets means bolters need watching, and the largely unshaded oval makes early morning the comfortable visit in summer. High Street's cafes are close enough that the post-run coffee is almost part of the park.

While you're out there

Thornbury's other off-leash option is Henderson Park, and the Merri Creek trail links south toward Northcote. For coffee, The Old Dog Cafe is the on-brand stop, while Little Henri and Briki Cafe both welcome dogs at outdoor tables.
