Henderson Park Dog Off Leash Area

Henderson Park is an open grassy reserve around Watt Street in Thornbury, sitting right alongside the Merri Creek trail, with a designated off-leash area on the southern side of the park below the playground and oval. The zone is unfenced, so this is a recall park rather than a containment one.

The dog setup

Darebin City Council allows dogs off-leash in the designated southern area, provided they stay within sight and under effective voice control. The leash goes back on within 10 metres of the playground and the shared paths, within 30 metres of the barbecue and picnic areas, and along the Merri Creek path itself. Carry a lead at all times and clip it on before you leave the zone, and pick up immediately; bins are on site. Under Darebin's local law, greyhounds stay on lead even in off-leash areas, and the rules are signed on site if anything has changed.

Worth knowing

There is a dog water tap with a bowl, waste bins, picnic tables and seating, and an outdoor exercise gym along the edge of the green. Shade is thin, so plan around hot days. The lower part of the oval holds water after rain, which shrinks the dry running space until it drains.

Max: because the whole zone runs open to the Merri Creek trail, a dog with patchy recall needs a long line here. Cyclists and prams pass constantly along the shared path boundary.

Getting there and parking

The park sits off Watt Street, with the usual kerbside parking on the surrounding residential streets. It is an easy walk or ride in along the Merri Creek trail from Northcote or Fairfield, and the St Georges Road tram route is a short walk away for anyone coming without a car.

Close by with the dogs

Merri Park Dog Off Leash Area across the creek in Northcote is the bigger grass option a few minutes further along the trail, and Mayer Park is the other Thornbury off-leash reserve. For coffee afterwards, Jerry Joy on Mansfield Street keeps a dog-friendly courtyard, and the High Street strip is a short leash-walk away.
