Henderson Park is an open grassy reserve in Thornbury with a designated off-leash area, sitting alongside the Merri Creek trail. The off-leash zone is unfenced, so it suits dogs with reliable recall rather than ones that need a contained space.

The rules. Dogs are off-leash in the designated area south of the playground and oval. They must be on lead within 10 metres of playgrounds and barbecues and on the shared Merri Creek path, must return on command, and must not worry other people or animals. Pick up after your dog and carry bags. Under Darebin's local law greyhounds stay on lead even in off-leash areas, so confirm current signage on site.

What's there. A dog water tap and bowl, waste bins, picnic tables and seating, an outdoor exercise gym, and a large open green space. Shade is limited, so plan around the weather.

Getting there. The park is around Watt Street. Parking is usually available on the surrounding residential streets. It is easy to reach on foot or by bike via the Merri Creek trail, and a St Georges Road tram is a short walk.

Nearby with the dogs. The dog-friendly cafes along St Georges Road and High Street are a five to ten minute walk for a coffee afterwards.

When to go. Weekday mornings and early afternoons are quietest; weekday evenings after 5pm and weekend mornings draw the crowd. The lower part of the oval gets wet after rain, which cuts the usable dry space.
