Jerry Joy is a small neighbourhood cafe on Mansfield Street in Thornbury, set back from the High Street strip on a leafy residential block. The draw for dog owners is the covered courtyard out the back, which keeps working through Melbourne's four-seasons-in-one-day weather, paired with a brunch menu that leans Asian and a cabinet of house-made sweets.

The dog setup

Dogs join you in the covered rear courtyard, and there are a few footpath tables out front when the weather is kind. The indoor room is small, so dogs generally stay outside. Staff are known for being warm with visiting dogs and usually arrange a water bowl, though bringing your own removes any doubt. Keep your dog on a lead and settled beside the chair; the courtyard is roomy enough to lie down comfortably, but it fills up on weekend mornings.

Worth knowing

The kitchen gives you a reason to linger: chilli scramble, Turkish eggs, wild mushroom hash and okonomiyaki all get regular mentions, along with the halloumi wrap and the crumpets. Coffee holds up, and staff reviews are consistently about how welcoming the room is. Expect a short wait for a courtyard table on weekends, particularly late morning.

Getting there and parking

The cafe is at 128 Mansfield Street, with street parking on Mansfield and the surrounding residential streets. The 86 tram along Plenty Road stops within a short walk. Opening hours run 7:30am to 3pm on weekdays and 8am to 3pm on weekends.

Close by with the dogs

Mayer Park Dog Off Leash Area is close enough for a proper off-lead run before breakfast, and Henderson Park covers the same job on the other side of the suburb. The Old Dog Cafe is the obvious next coffee stop if you are making a morning of it.
