Harper's Kitchen

Harper's Kitchen is a relaxed, fully licensed cafe at 78 Inkerman Street, St Kilda, Maori-owned, LGBTQ+ friendly and firmly part of the suburb's morning routine. It opens from 7am on weekdays, and the pavement tables out the front take dogs, which makes it a natural stop on a walk between the backstreets and the foreshore.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating: front footpath tables plus a courtyard behind, all on a lead. Staff often bring out a water bowl unprompted, but pack your own on hot days just in case. Indoor seating is people only, and Inkerman Street foot traffic is constant, so a dog that is happy to settle under a table while St Kilda walks past is the right fit.

Worth knowing

The bagels are the headline act, with the stacked Reuben bagel and salmon versions earning the cafe a following well beyond the postcode, and the chilli scramble, chai and house-made chips keep the regulars coming. Coffee is consistently praised and there is a matcha line for the non-coffee half of the table. Hours run to mid-afternoon with Sunday closed, and weekends are the busy stretch, so a weekday morning is the easiest slot with a dog. There is no dedicated dog menu.

Getting there and parking

Inkerman Street parking is metered and tight on weekday mornings, with residential streets nearby filling fast. The trams along St Kilda Road and Chapel Street are both within walking distance, so arriving on foot with the dog already mid-walk is the sensible play.
