Treaty of Paris (Top Cafe) Sandgate

Treaty of Paris, also known as Top Cafe, is a family-run, French-leaning bakery cafe a short walk from the Sandgate waterfront, trading under the TOP Sandgate banner. It is best known for its pastry case, and the shaded footpath seating out front is where dogs come along for the ride.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor footpath seating, which has plenty of shade through the morning. The setup is kerbside rather than courtyard, so keep your dog tucked close to the table. Treats and water are not advertised as laid on here, so bring your own bowl and ask on the day; the cafes closer to the foreshore are the ones that lean harder into dog extras.

Worth knowing

The pastry work is the draw: almond croissants, pain au chocolat and a Belgian-chocolate New York croissant, plus French-inspired breakfast plates and a well-regarded coffee. Hours run 6am to 1:30pm Tuesday to Sunday, closed Mondays, so it is strictly a breakfast and brunch venue, and popular lines can sell through by late morning on weekends.

Getting there and parking

The cafe sits in the Sandgate village end of Flinders Parade, a block or two from the water. Street parking runs along the parade and through the village, and it gets busy on weekends when the foreshore draws the crowds.

Close by with the dogs

The Sandgate-Shorncliffe foreshore path runs alongside the suburb's water edge, and Shorncliffe Pier is a short scenic on-lead stroll. The Sandgate Foreshore Park off-leash area handles a proper run, and for other stops Baaia on the water is known for its pup extras while 3 Blind Mice Cafe covers the village end.
