Sandgate Foreshore Park Dog Off Leash Area

The Sandgate Foreshore Park dog off-leash area is a tidal beach strip on Brisbane's northern bayside, running along Flinders Parade. One thing decides the whole visit: the tide. Low water opens a vast run of sand and shallows for a proper off-leash session, while a high tide can swallow the beach almost entirely.

Leash status

Under Brisbane City Council rules the off-leash stretch runs along the tidal beach from around Second Avenue through to Park Parade near Zeehan Street, with dogs under effective voice or hand control and a leash carried at all times. Keep the lead on in the adjacent foreshore parklands, on the footpaths and picnic areas, and on the upper foreshore pathways along Flinders Parade; the beach north and south of the marked zone is on-leash territory.

Stay inside the marked boundaries. This sits within the Moreton Bay Marine Park and the shorebird habitat along the flats is protected, so keep dogs away from feeding waders. Clean up and use the bins provided along the foreshore.

Max: the flats turn to mud fast on a falling tide, so rinse the paws before the car trip and check the tide chart before you commit to the drive.

Water and terrain

Open sand, tidal flats and shallow paddling water are what you get at low tide, and the Moreton Bay water here is gentle with no surf to contend with. The flats can be soft and muddy, which most dogs treat as the entire point of the outing. Natural shade on the beach is limited through the middle of the day, so mornings suit best in the warmer months.

Getting there and parking

It is roughly 30 minutes north of the Brisbane CBD by car, with off-street and street parking along Flinders Parade. By train, take the Redcliffe Peninsula Line to Sandgate Station and walk 10 to 15 minutes east to the foreshore, which makes this one of the easier off-leash beaches to reach without a car.

Worth knowing

Council bins and dog waste bags sit along the foreshore, with benches and shaded picnic spots set back from the sand, but bring your own water as there is little on the beach itself. Check the BOM tide times for the Brisbane Bar and aim for low tide for maximum space. Weekend mornings and weekday late afternoons are the busiest windows; a weekday mid-morning is calmer if your dog prefers fewer interruptions.

While you're out there

Several dog-friendly cafes sit right on the waterfront, including Baaia on Flinders Parade with its pup cups, and The Wired Owl Coffee Co a short walk back from the sand.
