Elephant Cafe(Newport)

Elephant Cafe sits on the corner of Maddox Road and Severn Street in Newport, a family-run brunch cafe whose sunny corner patio does double duty as the dog section. It is a quiet residential corner rather than a main road, which makes it one of the more relaxed west-side patios to share with a leashed dog.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome across the outdoor patio and footpath seating, with water bowls usually put out for canine guests. Inside stays people-only, so come straight to the patio side. Leads on and dogs tucked close to the table; the cafe fills with families and prams on weekends, so a settled dog matters. On hot days pack a portable bowl as backup.

The vibe

Community brunch with genuinely generous plates. The rosti dishes are the reason people cross town: vegetarian, salmon with citrus hollandaise and a pulled pork version all get called out by name, alongside chilli scrambled eggs and a steak sandwich for lunch. Coffee is solid and there are vegan and vegetarian options throughout. Hours run 7am to 3:30pm on weekdays, 7am to 3pm Saturday and 8am start Sunday.
