Pilot Station Cafe at Low Head

Pilot Station Cafe sits inside the Low Head Historic Precinct at 399 Low Head Road, where the Tamar River meets Bass Strait about ten minutes north of George Town. The draw for dog owners is simple: the outdoor and alfresco tables face the water, the old pilot buildings do the backdrop, and dogs are welcome at those tables while you work through the seafood and the cake cabinet.

The dog setup

Dogs join you at the outdoor and alfresco seating, and the tables sit close enough to the river that a leashed dog can settle without being in the walkway. Indoor seating is a working kitchen and food-service space, so it is assistance dogs only, as with most cafe interiors. Staff are relaxed with dogs at the tables and will usually sort out water, but reviews and regulars suggest bringing your own portable bowl rather than counting on one being out.

The vibe

This is casual seaside food rather than fine dining: fish tacos, scallops with house-made tartare sauce, and a cake cabinet that gets named drops for the orange almond cake and the pineapple fritters. Coffee is locally roasted. The precinct itself dates back to the pilot station's maritime history, and the lighthouse and foghorn are close enough to fold into the visit. Hours shift seasonally and the cafe shuts on some weekdays, so check current opening times before you drive out.

Getting there and parking

Follow Low Head Road north from George Town for five to ten minutes and the Pilot Station complex is at the end of it. There is free onsite parking within the precinct, so the car stays put while you walk the grounds on lead.

While you're out there

East Beach, east of Cimitiere Creek, is George Town Council's dedicated off-lead exercise beach, and it is a short drive from the precinct, with the usual rules: leash in hand, voice control, bags carried. Note that nearby Lagoon Beach and Pilots Bay carry summer restrictions, dogs limited to before 9am and after 6:30pm from 1 December to 31 March. The historic precinct paths around the lighthouse and museum buildings are on-lead. For a fenced run on the way back through, George Town Bark Park is in town, and Exeter Fenced Dog Park suits if you are heading across the river.
