Low Head Pilot Station Precinct Walk

Red and white convict-built cottages look out over the mouth of the River Tamar at Low Head, and this heritage walk winds between them. It is in Low Head, just north of George Town, and dogs come on a lead.

Lead rules

The Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service manages the historic site. Dogs must stay on a lead no longer than 2 metres in the historic precinct and public reserves.

Stricter rules apply in the penguin and wildlife protection zones along the coast. Stick to the paths and follow the signs.

Max: Penguins nest along this coast. Keep a short lead near the headland and stay on the paths.

The walk

Surfaces change as you go, from mown lawn on the village green to concrete around the buildings and gravel or rock out on the headland. Views run across the estuary to the entrance of Bass Strait.

There is parking inside the precinct and bins near the car parks and museum. Shade is scarce, and there are no dog water stations, so bring a bowl.

Make a day of it

Stop at the Pilot Station Cafe at Low Head in the precinct, or drive back into town for the George Town Foreshore Trail.

With little shade on the headland, go early in summer. It suits dogs happy on mixed ground.
