George Town Foreshore Trail

The George Town Foreshore Trail follows the Tamar River past fishing jetties and small sandy beaches, on a wide path that stays firm underfoot even after rain. Plan on keeping your dog on lead and it is an easy, pleasant outing.

Leads and local zones

George Town Council welcomes dogs on lead along the foreshore path. The council also maps on-lead, off-lead and restricted zones around town, so read the signs where the trail meets parks and reserves, some of which are tightly controlled to protect wildlife.

The walk

Most of the route is paved, wide and close to flat, with views over the river to the hills beyond. Mature trees in the parklands give patchy shade, while the coastal stretches are open to the weather.

Free parking sits at several points beside the foreshore, and bins and public toilets are dotted through the parklands. Carry water and a bowl for the dog.

Locals often extend the walk through the parkland around York Cove, or keep going toward East Beach for a longer coastal day.

Make a day of it

Burn off any leftover energy at the Bark Park in town, then drive out for a coffee at the Pilot Station Cafe at Low Head.

Who it suits

The gentle gradient makes this a good pick for older dogs and slow sniffers. The open river stretches catch whatever weather is about, so a calm morning is the nicest time to go.
