Bistro 19

Bistro 19 is the marina-side cafe in Sanctuary Cove's Marina Village at 5 Masthead Way, Hope Island, running breakfast and lunch from 6:30am to 2:30pm every day of the week. It has built its following on the Gold Coast's northern waterways largely on the strength of its alfresco deck, and dogs are a genuine part of the picture here rather than a tolerated exception.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcomed on the weather-protected timber alfresco deck, which catches the sea breeze off the marina and gives a well-behaved dog room to settle beside the table. Staff keep water bowls on hand for visiting dogs, and the venue has been known to spoil regulars with dog-friendly peanut butter and bacon ice cream on warm days. Keep your dog leashed and on the deck boards rather than on the chairs, and keep plates to yourself. If the deck is packed on a weekend morning, give the staff a heads up on your way in.

The vibe and the menu

Locals call it the best coffee in the Cove, and the kitchen backs it up with proper breakfasts. The Cove stacks poached eggs, bacon, roasted tomato and hash brown on Turkish bread and comes bundled with a regular coffee or tea, while the Big Swing adds a cheese kransky or pork sausage, baked beans and a second hash brown. There is avo smash with Danish feta on sourdough, breakfast burgers and American-style waffles for the sweet end of the menu. Smoothies and juices cover the non-coffee drinkers, and the venue is licensed for a beer or wine with lunch. Service has a reputation for moving quickly even when the deck is full, which matters when you are managing a dog at your feet.

Getting there and parking

The cafe sits inside Sanctuary Cove, set back from the main Hope Island traffic along Masthead Way, with marina village parking a short walk away. Weekends fill early with the boat and brunch crowd, so weekday mornings are the relaxed version of the same visit. It works best as a planned stop: walk the waterfront paths through the Cove first, then land here for a late breakfast.

Close by with the dogs

For an off-lead run before or after breakfast, the fenced enclosure at Saltwater is the closest option in Hope Island, and Mangrove Jack Park in Helensvale adds a larger unfenced leash-free area a few minutes north. If you are turning the visit into a cafe crawl, B.Social Cafe Santa Barbara and Native Harvest Cafe are the other dog-friendly picks in the same suburb.

Max: the deck plus a bowl of water on arrival is the tell of a cafe that actually wants dogs there. This one passes.
