Tasty Sudaca

Tasty Sudaca brings Latin American street food to the middle of Bulcock Street, occupying shops 1 and 2 at 50 Bulcock Street in Caloundra's main dining strip. The kitchen runs breakfast and brunch hours only: 8:30am to 2pm Tuesday to Friday, from 8:30am Saturdays and 7:30am Sundays, closed Mondays. Dogs are welcome at the footpath tables out front, and the smoky, savoury menu is a genuine point of difference from the standard eggs-and-smashed-avo strip.

The dog setup

Dogs join you at the outdoor footpath seating along Bulcock Street; inside is off limits. It is a popular stop with local dog owners, water bowls are usually around, and the staff have a reputation for being kind to four-legged customers. The footpath is a working strip though, with foot traffic and other dogs passing, so a dog that settles under the table works best. On busy weekend mornings bring your own bowl just in case the spares are all in use.

What is on the plate

This is South American street food done properly: freshly baked empanadas with fillings like cheese and mushroom, chicken and cheese, or seafood and cheese, plus arepas and hearty churrasco. The beef-and-cheese Sudaca Roll is the signature order, and the bacon and egg breakfast covers the traditionalist camp. Milkshakes and good coffee round out the menu, and portions run generous. If you want to taste your way through the cabinet, midweek is the relaxed time to do it; Sundays start earlier than the rest of the weekend for the post-walk crowd.

Getting there and parking

The cafe sits in the Centrepoint Marketplace end of Bulcock Street, a short walk uphill from Bulcock Beach. Street parking runs along Bulcock Street itself, with additional free parking on Minchinton Street and behind the main strip. From the beach, plan on a five minute walk up the hill, which counts as the warm-up for the empanadas.

Close by with the dogs

Bulcock Beach below the strip is on-lead territory for a boardwalk stroll, and the coastal path continues around to Kings Beach. Important: Kings Beach itself is a council designated dog prohibited area, beach and parks included, so keep the lead on the pathway and do not plan an off-lead run there. For genuine off-lead time, Coochin Park Dog Off Leash Area at Dicky Beach is a few minutes north, and Shelly Beach allows time-restricted off-lead access in the cooler months. Other dog-tolerant stops nearby include Salti Reads and The Happy Turtle Cafe.
