Wide Open Road Cafe

Wide Open Road is the specialty roaster's own cafe, tucked into the Pier Arcade off Lawson Street in Byron Bay, up a side alley at 3/7 Lawson Street. It stays calmer than the main-drag brunch rooms, and dogs are welcome at the arcade tables out front, which makes it a quiet coffee stop with the dog in the middle of town.

The dog setup

Dogs sit in the outdoor laneway-arcade seating on lead, positioned so they do not block the walkway; indoors is off-limits. Water bowls are usually offered, so just ask. The arcade setting is the real advantage for dog owners: no passing pram traffic or kerbside plates, just a sheltered corner to settle while the coffee lands.

Max: any time outside the morning rush suits this one, the arcade only fills when the town does. Pair it with an on-lead wander towards the Belongil end afterwards.

The vibe

The coffee is roasted by Wide Open Road itself, backed by batch brew and a short, well-made menu of gourmet toasties, including a haloumi toastie with a following, salmon bagels and fruit toast. The space doubles as a small cultural hub with vinyl, books and Deadkooks surfboards in the mix, and staff are consistently praised. Doors open from 7am, 8:30am on Saturdays, wrapping up mid afternoon.

Getting there and parking

The cafe sits in the Pier Arcade just off Lawson Street. Street parking on Lawson Street and the side streets gets busy, and the council-run Lawson Street North car park is close but fills in peak season, so arriving early is the simplest plan with a dog on board.

Close by with the dogs
