The setup. cafe d'Yvoire is a small French-leaning cafe at 189 Darling Street, in the calmer upper stretch of the strip. The footpath tables are the dog spot and the pick of the house - prime Darling Street people-watching. The interior is snug, so outside is more comfortable for a dog anyway.

Good to know. Staff are accommodating to dogs, but bring a travel bowl to be safe. It gets busy on weekends, so an early morning is your best shot at a relaxed footpath table. Open 7am to 3pm daily.

Known for. French-inspired brunch - ratatouille with baked eggs, pastries - and consistently well-rated coffee. A cosy, authentic neighbourhood feel.

Getting there. The 441 and 442 buses run along Darling Street. Street parking on Darling Street and side streets like Mullens Street is tight and time-limited, so read the signs.

Make a morning of it. Elkington Park, home to the Dawn Fraser Baths, is a short walk down Darling Street for water views, and Ewenton Park offers another grassy patch overlooking the harbour.
