Sunshine Beach Dog Off Leash Area - Beach Access #29 and North

The northern stretch of Sunshine Beach is an off-leash dog area running from Beach Access #29 up towards the Noosa National Park boundary. It is a wide, cliff-backed run of firm sand that stays noticeably quieter than the surf club end, which is the main reason to come here: room to move without the crowds.

Leash status

The off-leash zone starts at Access #29 and continues north, and it is open around the clock, though daylight hours are the sensible pick. Dogs must stay under effective voice control the whole time, and outside this stretch, south towards the flagged bathing reserves, dogs need to be leashed or are not permitted at all.

Do not carry on into Noosa National Park at the northern end, where dogs are prohibited. Off-leash boundaries and time windows on Noosa beaches shift with the seasons, so read the current Noosa Council signage at the access point before you unclip. Carry bags and clean up as you go.

The water

This is open surf beach, not a calm bay. The sand is wide and firm at low tide, which is when the run is at its best for a proper gallop. The shorebreak and rips are real, so this suits confident swimmers, and it pays to keep a close eye on dogs near the water.

Watch-outs

Max: check the signage at Access #29 every visit. The rules move with the season and the National Park line to the north is a hard no for dogs.

Respect the dune and conservation vegetation behind the beach. Bluebottles can wash up after onshore winds, and the sand gets hot underfoot in summer, so time your visit to the cooler ends of the day.

Getting there

Come in via the streets at the top end of Sunshine Beach, such as Belmore Terrace or Seaview Terrace, and take the maintained access path at #29. Parking is limited street parking near the access and it fills quickly on weekends and school holidays. Facilities are minimal: expect a waste bag dispenser near the access and little else, so bring your own water.

While you're out there

The sand continues south towards Castaways Beach for an on-leash change of scenery, and the coastal walk links through to the headland. For coffee afterwards, Sunshine Social Coffee Roasters sits in the village, and the Shorehaven Park off leash area at Noosaville is a calmer option on windy surf days.

When to go

Early morning or late afternoon near low tide gives you the most sand and the fewest people. Sunset along this stretch is worth timing for, and it suits big runners who want space away from the busy main beach.
