Castaways Beach

Castaways Beach is an open, bush-backed stretch of coast south of Noosa Heads, and its headline feature for dog owners is scale: a continuous off-leash zone running between beach access 38 near Burgess Creek and access 47 near Tristania Drive at Peregian Beach. It is one of the longest uninterrupted dog runs in Noosa Shire, and dogs are off-leash around the clock on that sand.

The rules

Off-leash applies between accesses 38 and 47, any time of day, under effective voice control. Dogs go back on the lead the moment you leave the sand for the access paths, car parks or streets, and signposted bathing reserves along this coast are strictly no dogs. Watch the council signage as you move along the beach, because the boundaries matter here: Noosa Shire Council fines run to several hundred dollars for dogs off-leash in prohibited areas or uncollected waste.

The water

This is open surf, not a protected bay, and the beach is not patrolled year round. Low tide is the sweet spot, opening a wide, firm strip for running and gentler water for keen swimmers. At high tide the water pushes up towards the dune line and the usable sand shrinks. If the swell is up, keep your dog in the shallows and read the conditions before letting a strong swimmer off.

Max: a 24-hour off-leash beach is a gift, but it only works if you know where access 47 ends. I check the sign at the ramp before dropping the lead, because drifting past the boundary puts you straight into a fine zone.

What's there

Facilities are basic but functional for a long session: toilets and showers near the main access points, dog washing stations, benches in places, and the bushland backdrop keeps the feel natural and far quieter than the central Noosa beaches. Bring your own water and a bowl, as fresh water is not guaranteed at every access.

Getting there

Drive David Low Way and pick a numbered access between 38 and 47. Free parking sits at most access points, with a smaller, quieter car park at access 41 and more space at the southern end near Tasman Trespasser Park at Marcus Beach. TransLink buses along David Low Way stop within walking distance of several accesses.

Watch-outs

Early mornings and weekends draw the regulars, and the surf and rips are the real hazard since there is no lifeguard coverage most of the year. Keep dogs clear of the dune vegetation and stay alert at the boundaries of the bathing reserves.

When to go

Mid week at low tide, ideally late afternoon, gives you the widest sand and the fewest dogs. If you want to extend the day, the off-leash stretch at Sunshine Beach, access 29 and north continues the run of dog-friendly sand up the coast, and Hadz Cafe in Peregian Beach is a practical coffee stop on the drive south.
