Warnbro Dog Beach(Port Kennedy)

Warnbro Dog Beach is the signed off-leash stretch of the Port Kennedy foreshore along Warnbro Beach Road, on the City of Rockingham's coast. A protective reef keeps Warnbro Sound shallow and calm, which makes this one of the more forgiving beaches on the Perth side for a dog that likes to swim without dealing with surf.

Leash status

The beach is a designated off-leash exercise area under the City of Rockingham's rules, and it is open around the clock. Within the signed zone your dog just needs to stay under effective voice control, but you have to carry a lead the whole time. Keep clear of any marked bird nesting or dune conservation areas and the nearby playground, and clip back on during council events or coastal works when temporary on-leash rules can apply.

Bags and bins sit at the main access points, so pick up straight away. The zone does not run the entire foreshore, so read the signage at whichever path you come down.

Water and terrain

The reef and the shelter of Warnbro Sound mean gentle water and a soft sandy bottom, with tidal swings milder than the exposed metropolitan beaches further north. Low tide leaves firm flat sand that suits a good run, while high tide narrows the strip back towards the dunes. Seaweed builds up inshore at times, which is normal for this part of the sound rather than a sign the beach is unkempt.

Max: this is a popular fishing beach, so walk the waterline and scan for lines and hooks before you let anyone off the lead.

Getting there and parking

From the Perth CBD it is roughly a 45 to 50 minute drive south, and several beach access paths run off Warnbro Beach Road with street parking alongside. The dog zones most people use sit south of the main swimming areas. On public transport, Warnbro Station on the Mandurah line is the closest rail stop, then a connecting bus such as route 558 leaves you a short walk to the sand.

Worth knowing

Facilities on the sand are basic. There are waste bins and bags at the main entries but little natural shade and no drinking fountains, so pack water and something for shelter, especially through summer. The beach rarely feels crowded, even on weekends, which suits dogs that want space over socialising.

When to go

Early mornings before 9am and late afternoons are the comfortable windows, dodging both the heat and the strong afternoon sea breeze that rolls in along this coast. Sunset here is a local drawcard in its own right, so expect more company on still summer evenings.

While you're out there

If the wind gets up, swap sand for grass at the St Clair Reserve fenced dog park a short drive inland. Ellie's Cafe on Warnbro Sound Avenue has an outdoor area and does puppuccinos, and the Warnbro Tavern is the closest sit-down option for a post-beach lunch. For a coffee stop on the way back north, Bean at the Beach at Rockingham sits right on the foreshore.
