Warnbro Dog Beach is a designated off-leash exercise area on the calm, protected waters of Warnbro Sound in Rockingham, south of Perth. The sheltered water and hard-packed white sand make it a solid choice for dogs unsure about surf, and it stays quieter than the better-known Rockingham Dog Beach further north.

The rules. Dogs can run off-leash within the designated exercise area provided they are under effective voice control. You must carry a lead at all times and pick up after your dog, with bins provided along the foreshore. Keep a 10-metre buffer from playgrounds, picnic areas and BBQ spots. Not every stretch of the Warnbro coast is off-leash, so check the signage at your access point before letting your dog go.

The water and terrain. Warnbro Sound is largely protected, so the water stays calm regardless of tide, which suits nervous swimmers and puppies. Low tide opens up more hard-packed sand for running. Check the WillyWeather tide times for Warnbro Sound if you want to time a walk around it.

What's there. Waste bag dispensers sit near the main beach access points, though it is worth carrying a backup roll. Bins are spaced along the foreshore. Parking is free in the bays near the main accesses, and some entry points have public toilets and showers.

Getting there. It is roughly a 50 minute drive south of the Perth CBD via the Kwinana Freeway and Safety Bay Road. The most direct beach accesses are off Bayeux Avenue and St Malo Cove. By public transport, take the Mandurah line to Warnbro Station, then the 558 or 559 bus toward the coast.

Watch-outs. Summer afternoons often bring the "Fremantle Doctor," a strong sea breeze that whips sand around from mid-afternoon. An early morning visit, before about 8.30am, avoids both the wind and the after-work crowd.

Nearby with the dogs. Pengo's Cafe in nearby Shoalwater is a popular pet-friendly stop with outdoor seating close to the water. For a longer stay, look for pet-friendly accommodation around Rockingham and confirm pet policy and fees directly with the property when booking.

Calm water like this is a good spot to build confidence if your dog is still getting used to the beach, no waves to worry about.

Go early on a weekday if you want the sand to yourself, and check the signage at your access point since off-leash boundaries change along the coast.
