Meadowbank Dog Beach

Meadowbank Dog Beach is an off-leash stretch of Parramatta River foreshore within Meadowbank Park, accessed near 14A Meadow Crescent in Meadowbank. The defining draw is direct, unfenced swimming in a tidal river, which makes it a river-dog's spot rather than a coastal one.

The dog setup

The beach and adjoining grass are unfenced, so dogs must be under effective voice and visual control the whole time. Leashes go back on for the paved shared paths and anywhere near the playgrounds and sports fields, and City of Ryde restricts off-leash use whenever adjoining areas are booked for organised sport. Waste bags and bins are provided on site.

Check the signage at the park entrance before unclipping, because council has been updating time-of-day restrictions and the posted information is the authority on current off-leash hours.

Max: the boundary opens straight onto a public walking path and the river has no barrier either. If your dog ranges or will not recall off a moving cyclist, keep the leash on until you are firmly on the sand.

The water and terrain

This is tidal river frontage with a sandy beach that widens substantially at low tide and shrinks at high tide, so plan around the tide chart: low to mid tide gives the roomiest play area and easiest water access. The water can look murky after rain, which is normal for the Parramatta River, and the rocks at either end of the beach are worth watching with an enthusiastic swimmer.

Getting there

Street parking is available around Meadowbank Park, and Meadowbank Wharf and station are both within easy walking distance if you come by ferry or train. The Ryde Riverwalk passes right along the foreshore for a longer on-lead loop.

Make a day of it

For a fully fenced alternative nearby, Malak dog park at Melrose Park is a short drive up the river, and Charity Creek Cascades Dog Park is another enclosed option. For coffee, The Little Fig and Charles Street Kitchen Putney are both close by.
