Rockingham Kwinana Horse Beach sits on Rockingham Beach Road in East Rockingham, north of the grain terminal jetty: a quieter stretch of calm, shallow water shared between dog walkers and horse riders. It is the low-key alternative to the main Rockingham foreshore, open, sandy and rarely crowded.

Leash status

Dogs can run off-leash in this area but need reliable voice control and recall the whole time. Because horses use the beach too, keep your dog well clear of any horses in the water or on the sand, especially if your dog is untrained or reactive around other animals. Pick up after your dog; bins are sometimes provided but bring your own bags to be safe. Stay out of any signed conservation or nesting areas, and check the current signage on arrival, since this stretch sees far less documented traffic than the main dog beach.

Max: give any horses a wide, deliberate berth. This beach is shared space, and a startled horse is a real hazard, not just an inconvenience.

Water and terrain

The water here is calm and shallow compared with the open coast, which suits paddlers and dogs that like a wade more than a surf. The beach is open sand with room to run, and the general calm makes it an easy session for dogs still building water confidence.

Getting there and parking

This one is a drive rather than a walk-up: head along Rockingham Beach Road and look for the grain terminal, with the beach starting just north of it. Public transport does not run close to this stretch, so a car is the practical option. Free informal parking sits next to the beach, public toilets are nearby on Rockingham Beach Road, and a hose or water point near the toilet block is often available for rinsing sand off. Covered picnic tables and a barbecue area sit on the adjacent grass.

When to go

Sunday mornings are the busiest slot, Saturday afternoons follow, and Sunday evenings quieten down. Mid-week mornings and late weekday afternoons are your best bet for having the sand largely to yourselves.
