Deception Bay Dog Beach

Deception Bay Dog Beach is the off-leash stretch of the Deception Bay foreshore, running between Wallin Avenue and Joseph Crescent. It is a shallow, calm-water bay beach, so the draw here is a safe paddle and a long sandy run at low tide rather than surf.

The rules. Dogs may be off-leash on the sand between Wallin Avenue and Joseph Crescent, and must be under effective control and recall the whole time. On the foreshore footpath and everywhere outside the marked stretch, dogs must be leashed. Signage sets the current off-leash conditions, and the City of Moreton Bay updates these periodically, so read the signs on arrival. Pick up after your dog and use the bins along the path.

The water and sand. This is a shallow, muddy-bottomed bay, not open surf. At low tide you get a wide, firm run and easy shallow water for a paddle; at high tide the usable sand shrinks a lot. Check the Deception Bay tide times before you leave so you are not turning up to no beach.

What's there. Dog waste bins and a paved foreshore footpath run parallel to the sand, with benches and some shade along the way. There are BBQ facilities and grassed areas on the foreshore reserve.

Getting there. Off the Bruce Highway, take the Deception Bay Road exit; street parking is free along Captain Cook Parade and fills up on weekend mornings. Driving is easiest, though local bus routes run near Captain Cook Parade.

When to go. Aim for a weekday, mid-morning to early afternoon, timed with a low or dropping tide for the most sand. Weekend mornings between 6 and 8 are the busiest with locals. Good for social dogs that like a shallow paddle rather than strong swimmers chasing waves.
