Budgewoi Dog Beach

Budgewoi Dog Beach is an off-leash stretch of ocean beach at the northern end of Budgewoi on the NSW Central Coast, running from the Ocean Street beach access toward the surf club that marks the southern boundary. It is a natural, windswept beach that stays quieter than the main Central Coast tourist strips, and the off-leash zone runs 24 hours a day, all year.

The dog setup

Dogs run off-leash within the marked zone at any time, but go back on lead in the car park and on the path down to the sand. With no fencing, reliable voice control matters, and a leash should be carried at all times. Keep dogs out of the patrolled swimming area when flags are up, out of the adjoining nature reserve, and away from the dunes. Central Coast Council requires bags carried and waste cleaned up immediately, even though bins are usually provided near the main entry.

Worth knowing

Free car parking sits right near the beach access, with a few benches and shaded spots along the foreshore. On-site fresh water for dogs is limited, so bring a portable bowl and your own supply. The off-leash stretch at nearby Lakes Beach begins about 500 metres north of the surf club and runs toward Ocean Street, so the marked boundaries matter.

Max: there is no lifeguard patrol outside summer school holidays and no fencing, so keep a real eye on swell and rips before letting your dog swim past the shallows.

Getting there and parking

Head for Ocean Street, Budgewoi, for the main car park. It is roughly 90 minutes north from Sydney or an hour south from Newcastle by road, or take the Central Coast and Newcastle line to Wyong Station and connect to a local bus. Once in town, the beach is an easy walk from the shops.

Close by with the dogs

The Anchor on Budgewoi Road near Lakes Beach SLSC is the local coffee stop and genuinely welcoming to dogs, and the Budgewoi Hotel takes dogs in its outdoor street-facing seating. For another run further up the coast, North Entrance Dog Beach is a short drive north.
