Budgewoi Dog Beach

Budgewoi Dog Beach is an off-leash stretch of ocean beach at the northern end of Budgewoi on the NSW Central Coast, running from the Ocean Street beach access down toward the surf club that marks the southern boundary. It is a natural, windswept beach that stays quieter than the main Central Coast tourist strips, and the off-leash zone runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The rules. Dogs can run off-leash within the marked zone at any time, but must go back on lead in the car park and on the path down to the sand. Owners need reliable voice control once dogs are off-leash and should carry a leash at all times, since there is no fencing. Dogs are kept out of patrolled swimming areas when flags are up and out of the adjoining nature reserve. Bring your own waste bags and clean up immediately, even though bins are usually provided near the main entry.

What's there. There is free car parking right near the beach access, plus bins and usually bag dispensers at the main entry. A few benches and shaded spots sit along the foreshore, but on-site fresh water for dogs is limited, so bring a portable bowl and your own water.

Getting there. Head for Ocean Street, Budgewoi, for the main car park. It is roughly a 90 minute drive north from Sydney or an hour south from Newcastle. By public transport, take the Central Coast and Newcastle line train to Wyong Station and connect to a local bus toward Budgewoi. Once you are in town, the beach is an easy walk from the shops.

Nearby with the dogs. The Anchor, on Budgewoi Road near Lakes Beach SLSC, is the local favourite for a coffee afterwards and is known for being genuinely welcoming to dogs. Budgewoi Hotel on Budgewoi Road allows dogs in its outdoor and street-facing seating. For an overnight stay, Walu Caravan Park in Budgewoi offers pet-friendly powered sites and cabins with prior approval, and there are further pet-friendly holiday lets around the area on the usual booking platforms. Confirm any pet fees or room restrictions directly before you book.

Low tide is the best time to visit, uncovering a much wider stretch of hard-packed sand for long walks. Early morning before 8.30am or late afternoon after 4pm are the quietest windows; weekends draw the most locals. It suits confident swimmers and dogs with solid recall, less so nervous dogs that need a fenced run.
