North Shelly Beach Dog Beach

North Shelly Beach Dog Beach covers the northern end of Shelly Beach running towards Toowoon Bay on the Central Coast, and it is one of the region's most generous off-leash stretches: over a kilometre of open sand, 24 hours a day, with no time restrictions. It sits clear of the main patrolled surf area, giving dogs a proper run without colliding with swimmers between the flags.

Leash status

Off-leash runs around the clock along the designated stretch, starting from the beach access stairs and extending north. Dogs must stay off the main patrolled section of Shelly Beach and out of Toowoon Bay itself, along with the usual exclusions near schools and playgrounds. A competent person must control the dog at all times, with a maximum of four dogs per handler. The beach is unfenced, so effective voice control matters, especially when it is busy.

Max: the off-leash stretch is unfenced and runs right up against areas where dogs are banned, including the patrolled section and the bay itself. Know where the boundary is before you unclip.

Water and terrain

The beach is broad and sandy with rocky areas and rock pools dotted along the stretch, which adds a sniffing dimension to a visit for dogs that like exploring. Low tide opens up substantially more sand for running and shallow water; high tide narrows the usable beach considerably. Time your visit around the tide and the rock pools reward you at their best.

Pepsi: low tide is the best time. More sand means more room to run, and the shallows are perfect for a splash without dealing with the full force of the waves.

Getting there and parking

There is a large, free, dedicated car park at the main entrance via Shelly Beach Road. By public transport, catch a bus towards The Entrance with stops along Toowoon Bay Road followed by a short walk. The coastal pathways from Bateau Bay or Toowoon Bay also make a straightforward walk or cycle in.

When to go

Early mornings and weekdays are the quiet windows; school holidays and summer weekends bring holiday crowds down the coast. Check the tide times before you set out, since low tide gives you the full width of sand and easier access to the rock pools. This is a beach for dogs with solid recall and owners comfortable managing them on unfenced, open sand.
