Avoca Beach Dog Beach

Avoca Beach Dog Beach is the 600-metre stretch of sand running north from the Shark Tower towards View Street on the Central Coast, taking in open surf at one end and the calmer water of Avoca Lagoon at the other. It is off-leash around the clock, which makes it one of the most reliable Central Coast options for a genuine beach run rather than a timed-window squeeze.

Leash status

The off-leash zone runs from the Shark Tower north to View Street, and it applies 24 hours a day. Dogs are not permitted anywhere south of the Shark Tower, where the patrolled swimming beach sits, and they are also excluded from the Memorial Walk. Central Coast Council rules apply: dogs stay under effective voice control, you carry a leash, maximum four dogs per person, and you pick up after your dog. Rangers do patrol the boundary and fines apply, so know exactly where the tower is before you unclip.

Max: check where the Shark Tower is before you let the lead go. The on-leash and off-leash sections sit right next to each other and the boundary is only as good as your map of it.

Water and terrain

Expect a mix of open sand and shallow lagoon water. Low to mid-tide gives the most usable sand for running and fetch, while high tide narrows the strip considerably against the dune line. The lagoon is the fallback when the swell is up or the tide is high, and its still water suits smaller or less confident dogs better than the surf. Keep dogs clear of the lagoon edges where shorebirds are nesting.

Getting there and parking

Take the Central Coast Highway onto Avoca Drive and head for the beach. Aim for parking near the northern end around View Street so you are not walking the whole beach on-lead to reach the off-leash section. The beachfront car park off Avoca Drive near the surf club is the other option, and street parking fills early on warm weekends. By public transport, Gosford is the nearest station with a Busways connection to Avoca.

Worth knowing

Waste bags and bins sit at the access points, and there are public toilets, a water bubbler and picnic tables set back from the sand near the northern end. The surf club and its amenities are at the southern end, which is the part your dog cannot use, so carry your own water down to the off-leash stretch.

When to go

Early mornings before 8am and late afternoons are the quiet windows, and they matter more in summer when the whole beach is busy. Check the tide before you go; low to mid-tide doubles the running room. Confident dogs get the most from the open beach, with the lagoon as the calm-water option for nervous swimmers.
