Avoca Beach Dog Beach

Avoca Beach's off-leash area runs 600 metres along the northern end of the beach, from the Shark Tower up towards View Street, and takes in the calmer water of Avoca Lagoon as well as the open sand. Dogs can be off-leash here at any time of day, which makes it one of the more reliable Central Coast options if you want a real run rather than a quick footpath walk.

The rules. The off-leash zone sits north of the Shark Tower and extends to View Street; dogs are not permitted south of the Shark Tower at any time, where the beach is patrolled. Off-leash access applies 24 hours a day within the boundary, but dogs need to be under effective voice control throughout, and owners are required to carry a leash and pick up after their dog. Dogs are also not allowed on the Memorial Walk. Keep dogs clear of the lagoon where shorebirds are present.

The water and terrain. Expect a mix of open sand and shallow lagoon water. Low to mid-tide gives the most usable sand for running and fetch; at high tide the off-leash strip narrows considerably. The lagoon is a good back-up on a big swell day or at high tide, and it suits smaller or less confident dogs better than the open surf.

What's there. Waste bags and bins are supplied at the access points. Public toilets and a water bubbler are near the northern end, with picnic tables and grass seating set back from the sand. The patrolled southern end has the Surf Life Saving Club and more amenities, but remember dogs cannot go there.

Getting there. By car, take the Central Coast Highway onto Avoca Drive and head towards the beach; aim for parking near the northern end around View Street so you are not walking the full length of the beach with the dog on lead first. Street parking fills early on sunny weekends. The nearest train station is Gosford, with a Busways connection from there to Avoca.

Nearby with the dogs. The main Avoca village is a short walk from the beach and has cafes with outdoor seating that welcome dogs. For an overnight stay, Avoca Beach Holiday Park has dog-friendly cabin and caravan site options, and there are pet-friendly holiday rentals through the usual booking sites around Avoca and North Avoca.

When to go. Early mornings before 8am or a late afternoon session avoid the weekend and summer crowds, and low to mid-tide gives the most sand to work with. Good for confident dogs that like open water, with the lagoon as the calmer fallback for smaller or nervous swimmers.
