North Entrance Dog Beach

North Entrance Dog Beach is the designated off-leash stretch of The Entrance North Beach on the Central Coast, a roughly 400 metre run of open sand where dogs can swim and sprint off-lead around the clock. It is an unpatrolled beach with relatively calm water by Central Coast standards, and the sand is typically far less crowded than the beaches closer to Sydney, which is exactly why Central Coast dog owners guard it.

Leash status

The off-leash zone is marked by official Central Coast Council green signage, and it applies only within that marked stretch of beach. Leash rules run right up to the sand: dogs must be leashed in parking areas and on the approach tracks, and unclipped only once on the sand inside the zone. Outside the boundary, neighbouring beaches and patrolled swimming zones are off limits to dogs, as is any ground within 10 metres of playground equipment. Council compliance officers do patrol, and effective control is the standing requirement, meaning recall that actually works rather than recall you hope works.

Water and terrain

The water suits paddlers and swimmers alike, generally calm enough for a nervous dog's first ocean session, though it is unpatrolled so swim within your own judgement. Low tide is the sweet spot, opening up wide firm sand for running; high tide narrows the usable strip, so check a Central Coast tide chart before you set out. There are no facilities on the sand, no water, no bins at beach level, so bring your own water and waste bags and plan to carry everything back out.

Max: The leash requirement runs right up to the sand track, not the car. Clip on before you leave the vehicle and keep your dog leashed across the parking strip and down the access track. Save the unclipping for when your paws hit sand inside the marked zone.

Getting there and parking

Access is via Hutton Road at The Entrance North, near Matron Simpson Reserve, with sand tracks leading down to the beach. Street parking on the surrounding residential streets is the go, and the closest spots go early on Saturday mornings. The beach sits a few minutes' drive north of The Entrance town centre.

Worth knowing

The backing dunes and upper-beach shorebird zones are protected habitat. Keep dogs off the dunes and away from nesting areas, because disturbing shorebirds is the fastest way to earn a ranger's attention and put off-leash access for everyone at risk. Weekday afternoons and midweek evenings are the quiet windows; Saturday mornings draw the biggest local crowd.

When to go

Aim for a falling or low tide combined with a weekday if you want the most sand and the fewest dogs. Summer weekends still work thanks to the size of the beach, just arrive before mid-morning.
