Bokarina Dog Beach

Bokarina Dog Beach is a wide, off-leash stretch of the Sunshine Coast that locals rate above the busier Mooloolaba and Kawana beaches nearby, mainly because it stays quieter. The sand runs from around Beach Access 239 through to 247, backed by natural dune bushland, and it is a genuine off-leash destination rather than a quick on-leash strip.

The rules. Off-leash access applies along the signed stretch, but always check the current signage at your access point as Sunshine Coast Council windows can vary by section and season. Dogs must be under effective voice control at all times, even off-leash. Dogs are not permitted in the dunal areas or the Bokarina Foreshore Bushland Reserve, so stick to the open sand. Carry poop bags and use the bins provided at beach access points.

Terrain and tides. The beach is wide and flat with sand-friendly access ramps at points like 240 to 245, making it an easy walk down for older or less mobile dogs. At high tide the usable sand narrows considerably, so a mid to low tide gives the most room for a proper run. Afternoons tend to pick up wind, so mornings are the more comfortable session.

What's there. Water bowls and dog-cleaning amenities are available near the main access points. Public toilets and a playground and picnic area sit nearby at Wyanda Park, close to Beach Access 239.

Getting there. The beach runs along Oceanic Drive, Bokarina. Free street parking is available along Oceanic Drive and at access points such as Blue Haven Court. From the Sunshine Motorway, exit towards Kawana Shoppingworld and follow through to Oceanic Drive. Translink bus routes 600, 601 and 602 stop on Nicklin Way, a short walk from the sand.

Nearby with the dogs. Stoa Bokarina, on Bokarina Blvd, has an alfresco area that welcomes dogs and is an easy stop after a beach session. A handful of holiday rentals in Bokarina and neighbouring Wurtulla advertise as pet-friendly if you're staying over.

Weekday mornings and quieter Tuesdays are the easiest times to get the beach mostly to yourselves. Aim for a mid to low tide for the most sand to work with, and get there before the afternoon wind picks up.
