Bokarina Dog Beach

Bokarina Dog Beach is a wide, quiet off-leash stretch of the Sunshine Coast between Beach Access 239 and 247, backed by natural dune bushland and rated by locals above the busier Mooloolaba and Kawana sand nearby. This is a genuine off-leash destination rather than a quick on-leash strip, with room to actually run.

Leash status

The rules vary by section, so read the signage at your access point before unclipping. The stretch around accesses 239 to 245 allows off-leash at all times under Sunshine Coast Council rules, while the southern section between accesses 245 and 247, running from Blue Haven Court down towards Wurley Drive, is time-restricted: on-lead between 8am and 5pm, off-leash before 8am and after 5pm. Whatever the section, dogs must be under effective voice control at all times, out of the dunal areas and the Bokarina Foreshore Bushland Reserve, and carrying a lead is part of the deal. Bag it and use the bins at the access points.

Water and terrain

The beach is wide and flat with sand-friendly access ramps at points like 240 to 245, an easy walk down for older or less mobile dogs. At high tide the usable sand narrows considerably, so a mid to low tide gives the most room for a proper run. Afternoons pick up wind, so mornings are the more comfortable session, and the shallows suit a paddle as much as a swim.

Max: low tide doubles the running room here. Check the signage at your access point too, the off-leash windows change between one beach access and the next.

Getting there and parking

The beach runs along Oceanic Drive, Bokarina. Free street parking sits along Oceanic Drive and at access points such as Blue Haven Court. From the Sunshine Motorway, exit towards Kawana Shoppingworld and follow through to Oceanic Drive, or take Translink routes 600, 601 or 602 to Nicklin Way, a short walk from the sand.

Worth knowing

Water bowls and dog-cleaning amenities sit near the main access points, and public toilets plus a playground and picnic area are nearby at Wyanda Park, close to Beach Access 239. The quiet rating holds most of the week; expect more company on weekend mornings and during school holidays.

When to go

Mornings at mid to low tide are the sweet spot: more sand, less wind, cooler conditions for dogs that overheat. On the time-restricted southern section, early morning and evening are the only off-leash windows anyway.
