Moores Hill Estate

Moores Hill Estate is a boutique, family-run winery at 3343 West Tamar Highway, Sidmouth, on the western shore of the Tamar Valley wine route. It was Tasmania's first fully off-grid vineyard, and well-behaved dogs on lead are welcome in the outdoor tasting areas.

The dog setup

Dogs stay on lead across the property, which is a working vineyard with wildlife moving through it, so a short lead and steady control matter near the rows. The outdoor seating is spacious and your dog can settle beside you through a tasting, though water bowls are not guaranteed so bring your own.

Max: keep your dog out of the vines even when things look quiet. There is netting, equipment and wildlife, and the rows are not a playground.

The cellar door

Tastings cover cool-climate Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Noir, all produced on solar power and battery storage without a grid connection. There is no full restaurant, but local produce plates, cheese and charcuterie boards run through the day, and the cellar door looks over the vines to the Tamar River.

Hours are 11am to 5pm daily. Walk-ins are generally fine, but a booking secures an outside table on busy weekends, which is the table you want with a dog in tow.

Getting there

Sidmouth is roughly 30 to 35 minutes' drive from Launceston on the west side of the Tamar River. Parking is flat and on site right beside the cellar door, so the walk from car to table is short and easy.

The Rowella wineries a short drive south make a tidy afternoon loop: Holm Oak Vineyards, Westella Vineyard and Iron Pot Bay Vineyard all pour in dog-friendly settings. For a seated lunch afterwards, The Ducks at Rosevears sits on the water on the drive back toward Launceston.
