Small Wonder Wines

Small Wonder Wines is a certified organic vineyard and cellar door at 530 Auburn Road, Kayena, sitting on the western ridge of the Tamar Valley about 40 minutes from Launceston. It pours cool-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling, and well-behaved leashed dogs are welcome in the outdoor lawn and garden areas while you taste.

The dog setup

Dogs on leads are welcome across the outdoor spaces, including the lawn and gardens with their views over the Tamar. The indoor tasting area sits close to the working tanks and barrels, so pets stay outside; if the weather pushes tastings indoors, plan for someone in your group to wait out on the lawn. Water bowls and treats are not provided, so bring your own, and keep leads secure since it is a working property.

The vibe

This is a working winery first and a tasting room second, which is part of the appeal. Tastings happen near the tanks in a relaxed, intimate setting, and the platters of local cheese, dips and flatbread pair with hand-picked, cool-climate wines. Visitors consistently mention the friendly staff and the picnic-friendly lawn. It is open daily from 11am to 4pm.

Getting there

The address is 530 Auburn Rd, Kayena, on the western bank of the Tamar River, roughly a 40 to 45 minute drive from Launceston. Parking is free directly in front of the cellar door, with coach parking also available.

While you're out there

The Tamar Valley is compact enough for several cellar doors in a day. In neighbouring Rowella you can pair a visit with Holm Oak Vineyards or Iron Pot Bay Vineyard, both of which also welcome leashed dogs outside, and Moores Hill Estate is a short drive up the west side. For lunch or coffee, Baringa Bar & Cafe in Exeter is the closest sit-down option.
