Vinden Wines at 138 Gillards Road is a family-owned, rustic cellar door where dogs are genuinely part of the experience, welcome inside as well as out. One quirk sets it apart: free-ranging peacocks roam the property, so a settled dog and a firm lead are non-negotiable here.

Where the dog goes. Dogs are welcome inside the cellar door beside you during a tasting, and out in the garden and grounds. Keep yours on a lead at all times and within the designated cellar door garden areas. The peacocks are the reason the lead rule matters more than usual.

What is there. Small-batch, traditional Hunter varieties, Shiraz, Semillon, Chardonnay and Tempranillo, plus the experimental minimal-intervention Vinden Headcase range. The vibe is relaxed, authentic and cosy. Bring your own water bowl.

Getting there. 138 Gillards Road, Pokolbin, with on-site parking right by the cellar door and vineyard.

Peacocks on the loose will test any dog. Keep the lead short, watch the body language, and do not let a chase even start.

When to go. A quieter weekday suits a dog that needs to stay focused around the resident birds. Earlier in the day is calmer all round.
