First Creek Wines

First Creek Wines at 600 McDonalds Road is a modern, award-heavy cellar door on the main Pokolbin thoroughfare, and one of the more dog-generous stops in the valley: well-behaved leashed dogs are welcome both on the covered patio and inside the tasting room itself. That indoor access is the standout, because it means the weather never decides whether the dog comes along.

Friendly dogs settle beside you at the tasting counter or out on the verandah, on lead the whole time. Staff are used to four-legged visitors and water bowls often appear, but bring your own supplies to be safe. The indoor welcome only holds while your dog stays calm and clean, so a restless dog does better on the patio.

The tasting

First Creek is a serious production house: the Silkman family leads the winemaking, the Chardonnay, Semillon and Shiraz collect trophies regularly, and the site also runs the Hunter's largest contract winemaking and bottling facility. The upside at the counter is quality across the range, and the food side keeps pace with cheese and salumi platters and structured wine-and-cheese matching experiences. Tastings look over the working winery, which gives the visit a bit of theatre.

Getting there and parking

The cellar door sits right on McDonalds Road with on-site parking immediately out front. It opens every day from 10am to 5pm, which makes it an easy anchor for a Pokolbin day regardless of what the rest of the itinerary does.
