Brokenwood is one of the Hunter's marquee names, with a large modern cellar door and restaurant at 411 McDonalds Road, Pokolbin. It is more polished than the boutique doors around it, but it still makes room for dogs on its outdoor terrace and at the Terrace Wine Bar, so you can sit down to a serious Semillon and Shiraz flight without leaving the dog in the car.
The dog setup
Dogs on lead are welcome across the outdoor areas: the deck and terrace, including the casual Terrace Wine Bar, weather permitting. The indoor tasting room and The Wood Restaurant are not for pets, so plan around the undercover outdoor seating. The terrace is the spot you want anyway on a fine Hunter day.
Keep the lead on the whole time and bring your own bowl and water; dog amenities are not guaranteed at a venue this size. A settled dog under the table is the brief, and the terrace draws a crowd on sunny weekends, so book an outdoor spot ahead or pick a weekday.
Pepsi: the Terrace Wine Bar is the move. Casual, outdoors, and you can work through a proper tasting with your dog stretched out beside you.
The vibe
The wines are the headline, especially the Hunter Semillon and Shiraz, poured by staff who know their range. The Terrace Wine Bar handles grazing and casual tastings with small plates, while The Wood Restaurant covers a full sit-down lunch indoors for anyone in your group off dog duty. Note the venue is cashless.
Getting there and parking
Brokenwood is at 411 McDonalds Road with a large free gravel car park out front and flat, easy access to the outdoor seating. Cellar door hours run 11am to 5pm weekdays and 10am to 5pm weekends. As a big-name door it fills from midday on weekends, so arrive early for an unhurried terrace seat.
While you're out there
Pair it with other dog-friendly doors nearby: Piggs Peake Winery on Hermitage Road welcomes dogs inside for tastings, and Saddler's Creek Wines pours in a relaxed pet-friendly garden. Tintilla Estate Wines rounds out a Hermitage Road run.
